Schools were obligated by federal and state law to have a Wellness Plan in place by the beginning of the 2006-2007 school year.  The district’s new and improved Wellness Committee structure was board approved in the fall of 2009.  During the 2009-2010 school year, the Wellness Committee studied current wellness needs within the school district and set goals to improve on any current need.  District needs and goals were established in three main areas:  Nutrition Education, Nutrition and Physical Activity.  The district goals were integrated into a district Wellness Plan of Action.  This Wellness Plan of Action was used as a guideline to promote healthier food and beverages choices as well as overall healthy lifestyle choices for both students and staff.  During the 2010-2011 school year the current Wellness Plan of Action was launched.

Although, a few members of the Wellness Committee have changed since 2009, the structure and goals of the Wellness Plan of Action have remained basically the same.  In addition, the Wellness Committee attempts to meet formally three times each school year.

In this, the 2016-2017 school year, the District Wellness Plan has entered into its eighth year.  On December 1st, 2016, the District Wellness Committee met for their first meeting of the 2016-2017 school year.  Beverly Newton, KSDE Wellness Coach, attended the meeting to review past practices of the Wellness Committee and Plan as well as provide suggestions for Wellness Committee moving forward.  Beverly Newton also assisted the district in preparing for its KSDE Nutrition and Wellness Administrative Review that was held in January of 2017.  The current Wellness Plan was board approved on February 13, 2017.  In addition, stakeholders will be advised on the new Wellness Plan through the KSDE KESA process during an upcoming District Site Council (DSC) Team Meeting.

The Wellness Plan is divided into three sections:
-Nutrition
-Student Nutrition Education
-Physical Activity
